So THAT happened.
After all the months of work—and the never-ending teasing newsletters—Scottie rocked the house last Sunday as we opened CLOWNS LIKE ME Off-Broadway at the DR2 Theatre at Union Square in the Big dang Apple.
The production team was stellar. The audiences taught us so much. The talkbacks dove deep.
The first review came in…
"With a mission of educating people about mental illness and reducing stigma, Ehrenpreis finds humor and heart in relating his experiences to the crowd during this one-man show."
- Theatermania
Bullseye.
And the afterparty at the sweet Italian joint on 18th? Oh we shut it DOWN. :)
I was up in my little East Village AirBnB for almost three weeks. Got to experience New York in a whole new way. My beloved Rebecca (last name “Harp”) came up for the final week, and then her sisters and brother-in-law and nephew joined for a few days before coming to opening. They rocked New York and I rocked along in between rehearsals and previews. The Harps Take Manhattan.
So many other friends either attended or wished us well from afar. All I feel now—besides exhausted—is gratitude.
The exhaustion is not just artistic. On Monday, Rebecca and her sister Sarah and I were supposed to fly home at noon. We didn’t leave the ground till 10pm. Delays! We spent 12 hours in LaGuardia. Egads.
But all are home safe, pups are back, still trying to get my bearings and wits back about me, and reading with glee all the show reports as Scottie and our unbelievable stage manager Jeff keep on doing the thing.
We captured this fantastic NY production on film this past Tuesday as well, so stay tuned for possible streaming options later this year. We’re also pushing hard to tour the show, find other places to sit it down. Having that Off-Broadway feather in our cap means the beginning of the mission, not the end.
Sidenote—if you know of any mental health organizations or theaters or groups that might be interested in bringing this show to their constituents… HOLLER AT ME!
I’ll be getting back on the blog and creativity newsletter bandwagon next week. Thank you for going on this adventure with me! If you have other questions, or want pictures from the top of the Empire State Building or something like that, just hit me up.
